In October 2000, I was planning a trip
to Hong Kong and had already heard of
Wayne's Discus Center; I contacted Bing
Seto who gave me Wayne's phone
number. Although, he was getting
ready to take a trip and he had just sold
several fish (thus having fewer fish to
show), Wayne Ng agreed to let me visit
and take some photos of his facilites. Even though we had not previously
met,
Wayne also treated me to a very nice dim
sum lunch! (And yes, I really enjoy
the true Hong Kong dim sum!) If you click
on the words "Wayne's Discus Centre"
at the top, you be connected to his website.
In the USA, some of Wayne's fish are available
from
Discus Fantasy,
while those people in Europe can get his fish from WayneDiscus.fr.
(click on the small photos
below for an enlarged view - note that the enlarged view
will be in a new window; close the new
window first before proceeding to the next
small photo, or else the new window will
be hidden from view.)
These are two photos of myself (on the
left) with Wayne.
The photo on the left is in his breeding
room, the photo on the right is at the
entrance to his facilities. My friend,
Susan, took these two photos. Wayne's
Discus Centre is located near a Pizza
Hut restaurant - I'm glad we went to have
dim sum instead!!
These
are Wayne's Leopard Snakeskin discus. I believe he calls them his
"Shooting Stars".
They were
HUGE!
I'd estimate they were at least
8 inches
(about 20cm) long. Wayne told me
that he had won a competition with
this
strain (I can't remember if it was the
Aquarama show in Singapore or the
Duisburg
show in Germany).
The
fish on the left are more Leopard Snakeskins and the fish on the right
are his Red Spotted Snakeskins. All very healthy and not camera
shy!
I've always like
nice Red Spotted Green and Leopardskin discus - these are
Wayne's own variety. Wayne stressed
to me that he only bred the "Hong Kong"
variety of discus - so there were some
strains (like Ocean Green) that he did
not stock nor breed.
These are two different
strains of blue
diamond. The fish on the top left looked
more "blue" in real life. The strain
on the right and bottom has some very small
scales and are of a lighter shade of blue. I think Wayne calls this his
"Super Angel Diamond".
The discus on the
left are Wayne's "Sweet
Temptation" and the ones on the
right are called "Golden Sunrise". Wayne doesn't use a centralized water
filtration system. Instead, each
aquarium tank has it's own overhead filter only
for mechanical filtration of solid wastes. His employees were doing water
changes while I was there - they change
a percentage of the water and clean
the glass each day, hence the healthiness
of his fish.
The fish on the left
are Wayne's "Blue Knight". It's a fish with a very high body.
The
fish on the
right, I believe are his "Red Diamonds", but I'm not sure.
They were getting ready to be shipped
out. A few days before they are packed
and shipped out, the fish are not fed. This lessens the amount of waste
that
is produced when the fish are confined
while in transit. Wayne's discus are
sold to Japan, Europe, the United States,
and around the world.
These are two pairs
of snake skins in Wayne's breeding room. They didn't
want to pose for the photos so they are
looking and swimming away.
These photos are
of Wayne's breeding room. I tried to get some more photos of his
breeding pairs, but the fish wouldn't
co-operate and no nice side poses. Of course
the discus fry/ babies were more than
happy to let me take their photo - probably
thought I was going to feed them.
