The following information is a procedure that needs to be used for all cold water fish. This procedure may also be used for warm water fish. This site addresses the freezer method, but the freezer method is too terribly painful, slow, and stressful, for the fish, so don't be attempting to put your fish in the freezer.

The following information can be used for all warm water fish:

Take a bowl that will accomodate the sick fish. Fill it with water, either from the aquarium, or tap water will be fine. I generally use the water from the aquarium only to make me feel better about the situation. It really won't matter, however, as this is a very quick method for the fish. Place the bowl of water into your freezer. Let the temperature fall to within a degree of the freezing point. To eliminate constant water temperature checks, it is recommended you leave the bowl in the freezer until a thin layer of ice forms ontop of the water. When the water has reached the desired temperature, remove the bowl and any ice that has formed. Take the bowl with you to the tank with the sick fish. Net the sick fish and place the net and fish into the bowl of water. In a matter of seconds, the fish's body temperature drops and causes all bodily functions to cease.

This is a permanent procedure and the fish won't come back to life. With that, I urge you to make certain you are doing the appropriate thing.
